attention all musicians!

Posted by rtil Sep. 14, 2009 @ 3:59 PM EDT

Blvd-Square and I have been working on a cartoon since February that is very important to us. We are nearing the end of the animation cycle and we've decided to open up the music to a contest!

This cartoon is going to be seen by a lot of important people who have worked with as many musicians as they have animators, and will be sent to scores of festivals across the USA and hopefully beyond - and your name could be on it. And i'm not just saying this, it's going to happen! This would be a great chance to have your music heard by more than just onlookers, playing next to an animated short with a lot of work and care.

If you'd like a shot at this, I only ask three things:
1. you must have samples of previous work
2. you must be reasonably available to make the track within the next month or two
3. please understand you will be composing a track loosely synced to events in an already animated cartoon. it will be about 4 minutes long.

Ready to enter? Here's how it works:
1. Here are 3 screenshots of the cartoon: 1 2 3 . With these 3 screenshots, you can do one of two things: send a 5 or 10 second clip of what you think a soundtrack to this would sound like, OR a song you've made in the past that you think fits.
2. Send your clip or link to lighthouse-music@rmcartoons.com, with some information about yourself, why you think you'd be best for the project, and some samples of previous work. You will receive an automated message if your submission was received. If you don't get one, feel free to PM your entry to me.

DEADLINE: September 28th, 2009(subject to change.)
TIP: we're looking for some lighthearted, adventure-y music. the original track we were going to use was this, which we have permission to use from Sega, but we'd prefer a more personal touch :).

Thanks to all of you! Jenna and I look forward to hearing from you.

NOTICE: we have chosen a winner and are no longer receiving submissions. winner will be announced soon.

Wow, really nice graphics. It'd be cool joining, but I've got too much going on right now... Looking forward to see the result, you really fit into Blvd's style and it'll be nice seeing something new from you.

I've got plenty of free time, and an entire sixth-form music-department at my disposal, so i'd be glad to put some samples together.

I've only got one of my tracks uploaded to the audio portal currently, but it's scored pretty highly.

http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/liste n/247616

It's not a good track for this game, but I thought you should hear some of my work.

I can have some samples ready by the end of the week if you'd like?

Sep. 14, 2009 | 5:32 PM rtil responds:

this is not a game, it is an animated short. if you'd like to join the contest, please send it to the e-mail or PM.

This has to be one of those few delayed cartoons that actually looks worth the wait. If i didn't know any better I'd of thought it was from some big movie judging by the pictures. Good luck with sending it to the festivals.

Sep. 14, 2009 | 5:26 PM rtil responds:

it has never been delayed. i've never said a release date

rmcartoons.com? How long has that been up? Nice portfolio either way. Btw you have a broken thumbnail in the still art section; the link's fine but the thumbnails broken.

And I know this undermines the entire competition but I think http://danman87.newgrounds.com/, and I'm sure you've heard of him, could make something that would fit this perfectly. Just in case you don't know who he is http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/liste n/197810

Sep. 14, 2009 | 6:11 PM macjsus says:

I might be able to help I actually written some compositions but most them are either "WRITTEN" or in MIDI form. The only music program I have is noteworthy composer, and it saves as midi files. However I am getting a new laptop and a real music program, but I am not sure if I will make the deadline. If it is postponed however PM me. I will have my resources (instruments, software, hardware) by next week or so, but I just may not have much time to work on it now. There not really long, mostly loops, but I can work on them to make them 3-4 minutes.

How long do you want it exactly?

I compose a lot with strings and have experience playing on woodwind instruments so understand exactly what your looking for.

Sep. 14, 2009 | 6:22 PM rtil responds:

a sample doesn't have to be very long at all. just enough for us to get the idea. good luck on the new machine

I'm definitely interested. I'll have to see if I can make a style of music that can fit. More info in the e-mail if I do end up getting something.

One last thing...
As great as the offer sounds, is credit all you offer for composing the music? I realize it would look good on a resume but, some incentive never hurts.

Sep. 15, 2009 | 1:49 PM rtil responds:

we're not doing it for money so it would be coming out of our pockets. but if we won anything we would definitely share what we got

seems like a good excuse for me to finally take a couple of weeks to touch up on some of the songs i've been working on and thinking of posting but deciding that they weren't finished yet.

Too bad by 2 weeks i'll most likely end up meaning 3-5 months depending on how busy i'll be, and you'll probably have someone by then, but at least its a reason to start working on getting those songs done ^_^.
