Also, I envy your vacations...

I have 18 months of College, and the only vacation they give us is "2 weeks at Christmas" and "2 weeks at summer vacation"

Thats all I get =(

So enjoy it for the both of us, okay?
Thanks<3

damn, that's unforgivable. i will certainly enjoy it for the both of us

I've always been a fan of 3D stuff, but I do agree that 2D will always have a place in cinema. I think the reason you like 2D is because of the slight imperfection of it. A computer is perfect, so it doesn't look like it's grounded in reality. It's like the difference between a painting and a photograph. A photograph is a perfect capture of the world around it, but a painting of the same subject will probably be more interesting to look at.

Once the whole hyper-realistic craze blows over the entertainment industry, we'll see a comeback for more interesting forms of art.

i hope you're right. yeah, i actually prefer the preview renders in 3d because they're more soft. the production renders are so crisp and sharp, it hurts my damn eyes lmao

I skimmed your news post so I hope you didn't say anything about it-

Freetown 2? Any news?

will be working on it all summer

i heard that you are doing freetown 2 in 3d and with guest appearances by Mario sprites and Smash Bros Wii Codes?

let me know.. i like that rumor!

there's another rumor that i'm going to punch you in the face. i like that one too.

This post sucked, I want more controversy.

i'm tired of responding to long comments!!!!!!!!

i only get one week of sumer vacation myself, during some random week in august, what the christ

do you go to a year round school or something?

When I was at ITT, we were all taught the basics of Max for a little over a year, and then a 2-week crash course in Maya right before graduating. :( I've practically forgotten everything I learned about 3d, but I can still understand all the hard work that goes into making 3d models.
If I had any spare money, I'd probably give Horton a look-see.... although I have to say that it's impossible to have an entire movie based on a children's book without filler being added. :P However, one of the best examples of 3d imitating 2d I've ever seen is Okami. Sure, it was blatantly 3d, but at least there was still a bit of cartoony feel here and there, especially when the characters' heads would squash and stretch whenever they talked. :3

i find it strange that schools mostly focus on max when the industry has clearly chosen maya. we learned max for a year and are learning maya this year, but since most people only knew max at the beginning of the year, they chose it to do their projects with. unfortunately for them it is only now that we are actually learning character animation in maya, and a lot of people want to switch but it's too late.

and if horton was "true to the story", it'd probably only be 15 minutes long, so i don't blame them for adding filler.

thanks for mentioning the theif and the cobbler wacthing it right now,

it is great. the fully restored, high res DVD is coming soon.

damn n***a u always sayin somethin profound why u gotta be all gay like that!

no but seriously i agree I mean some 3d stuff isn't even that bad but disney really is bringing a bad name to that shit. Us 2d animators will all be out on the streets in a few years.

i don't think we'll be out on the streets, but it would be much easier to find a job in 3d animation. however you'd probably be doing something horrible like unwrapping UV's for a living. what an exciting future!

I personally haven't used any 3d animation software, but from what I can tell it seems quite tedious. Aside from 2d, I lack any desire to go as far as 3d in the animation biz.

And yes notorious, we'll all be on the streets in a few years, and the newgrounds office will turn into a homeless shelter for forgotten animators; Tom will serve us soup.

But I have no idea what the usual quality on 3d renders should look like, so I admire that one there with the envy that I can't produce something like it. ; 3;

Nice work, hope you survive this last month.

i will, almost there heh.

maya or 3ds?

maya

btw when you said, the industry has chosen maya, it tends to be that games use 3ds max and films maya, and other specially programmed crap that ive forgotton the name of.

with the game industry it's a more balanced, yeah. i really don't want to work in games, and a small part of that reason is the fact a lot of them use max. people complain maya doesn't have enough modeling tools, but i found no practical use for half of max's modeling tools.

looks pretty cool i've made some 3d stuff before but you are way better an me i also love your work when are you going to release a new flash

as soon as possible. can't say exactly when, though

I never liked 3D Studio Max (GMax in particular); I'm better at hand-drawn animation than Computerized 3D. I hope that stop-motion and claymation get the attention they deserve as well.

a lot of people have been making mock stop-motion with clay shaders in 3D. it almost looks real. but you can tell it isn't because the models are void of fingerprints

I feel you, people are always jumpin' out of their skin to try something new, when really what they had before has so much left to be discovered. In a lot of cases, change is good, but who's left to make mold-breaking 2D when big-hitters like Disney have thrown it out the window (or at least still using it for that crappy straight to DVD mess).
Japan's still doing it for feature films, which I can appreciate, but there's lots of that stuff that really sucks. Me and 3D didn't get along either, it's pretty cool looking, but with me being a new animator I think I'm just sticking to 2D too for now.

For the record, I don't think that render looks too bad. Looks more detailed than my 3D Max experiments.

there are some bad 2D films, but now 3D films are a dime a dozen. and most of it (especially the stuff on tv), is absolutely horrid. you have people who have NO artistic background - but know the software - making these shows. who makes the decision to put these people in charge, i don't know. but they need a serious talking to.

Gotta agree with you wholeheartedly. There's just something about a 2D image that an overhyped, overdeveloped 3D image will never have. Can't quite explain it, it's just something I feel.

Don't think 2D animators are out of the running quite yet, though; especially ones who are skilled in flash. My mom works in advertising for a living, and she's good at it too; real good. She told me that there is a growing demand for skilled animators, because there are so few who actually know how to use the programs well. Now, I know you might think this either unrealistic or just me being a total suck-up, but I'm going to mention your name to her. Who knows? Something might just pan out. Stranger things have happened.

I admire the quality of your work; as an ADD-cursed person, it is almost incomprehensible to me how you are able to sit in front of a computer for the number of hours you must spend on your animations for them to come out as smooth and well drawn as they do.

I applaud your contribution to the Newgrounds community, and encourage you to keep at it; with your talent, you can definitely go places.

flash is a very promising industry. and a lot of 2D animators have dived right into it. it really is a tedious process like you say, but doing it and the end result is so rewarding, just knowing that i got a piece of my idea in animated form. thanks for the comment.

someone mentioned the 2d aniamtion movie making buisness is big in japan, that is true.i actualy like japenesse aniamtion alot , they made it into something that isnt just for kids.

however the one thing i hate about japenesse aniamtion is the fact that their action scenes can be pure gold but when the charcaters talk (and theres alot of talking in anime) the aniamtion turns to absolute shit , sometimes its just a still picture with a flapping mouth peice.i wish they would use this oppurtunity to express their characters personalitys and emotions more.

another thing is when the charcaters think to themsleves for a minute or two, god is that annoying .

japanese animators are huge abusers of the held still and floating mouths. most people don't seem phased by it, but for people like you and me it's a real annoyance. fact is for TV it's a time and money saver, sometimes they are forced to cut corners like that in order to make deadlines and stay on the air. where they make up for it, like you said, are in the more exciting scenes. still, i think that anime characters could monologue and talk out loud to themselves a lot less.

but the american animation industry could learn 1 important thing from the japanese industry - cartoons are not just for kids.

Aww ... I was touched by that.

No, seriously. Im glad that the one journal I randomly picked out this morning was something that made me happy to read about. It was insightful.

: )

You probably heard this a billion times , but you've got mad skills as an artist. Just thought I'd say so.

Hope you do well with your Finals !

thanks a lot, i'm glad you enjoyed it.

Pretty much sums up my views on the whole 2D/3D thing.

I love how you're so passionate about animation. I think yer goin places dood.

i'd love to go places, and eat the food there too.

How come almost every fucking comment you get is 43905345047 paragraphs long. Kind of annoying, I'd delete them all.

now imagine if they were all in chinese

NOT SO BAD ANYMORE NOW IS IT
