I sure as hell wasn't expecting my comment to show up.

I honestly was joking. While I am a bit fond of the series, the whole concept is in fact an overdone one. Video game parodies were original at one point, but I see the concept spiraling downhill. While I don't disagree that there is some humor to it, originality is more important than people think. The reason people like video game parodies is because its something they recognize and they enjoy. Why do people pay attention to famous celebrities? Because they know who they are, and enjoy their movies. People are just simple and like what they already know.

(See? I can type coherently.)

I knew your review was ultimately sarcastic, but I posted it because it really is an example of what a lot of people want. More and more of the same thing. But I think there's other things out there they would love, but they have be given the opportunity to be exposed to them , because they're not going to find it on their own.

My bad. You're right. I don't know you.

i wish i could post giant pictures here like in the backalleys

this drama needs a HUGE jpeg of an ice cream cone with an old lady's face

zekey you are the king of image macros

fact of the matter is its a stupid faaaaad. i woulndt dislike egoraptor because of it though hes just an artist. its pretty annoying how some of his compilations get crazy attention... its like something the admins who front page it dont realize he has had enough attention... mga2 for sure but those spots put for the compilation jipped hardworking artists of out their fame in my opinion.

and any artist who listened to that special message from the menu on mga2 i mean id be surprised if they dind't think he was a prick. i could get through the damn thing it was the most egostatiscialsdflsal thing ive ever fuckin heard.

i guess waht im trying to say is egoraptor got a little to much attention and was a prick about it, but it wasn't his fault it was the admins and viewers.

I think that if any movie of that quality that wasn't "awesome" or a videogame parody would probably be blammed.

I agree with you, we need the original ideas to float to the surface

I feel you, I put a lot of thought and time into my creations, and I hate seeing unoriginal content beating me out all the time. I don't wanna diss Egoraptor, dude even said he likes my movies, but I do feel like animators like myself are getting a shitty deal because of people using the familiarity gravy train. I don't think you have much to worry about, people love your stuff, but I hate how almost everything with a popular name attached to it ends up with a score a whole point higher than it would've been had it been original.

From what I've observed, you make it to the top either by doing something popular or making something original and coming with fire behind it. So they can vote 5 on Sonic Naruto Adventures X all they want to, I'm gonna still put the same love and power into my movies as always until I make it to the top. And I hope other people who feel the same way do the same thing. I'm not giving up on making my own stuff with my own comedy style.

You are the Chris Crocker of animation spokespeople.

eww

Just as an introduction:
As i said before and as most people have been saying the "flagship of effortless parody." was to get himself noticed as a voice actor. Then he (egoraptor) gets an offer from MTV B-hole, (the men in suits as you call them) so more were produced. Though his movies may have a higher position on the front page, higher score and more views it still doesnt mean its better than the flash movies under it, it simply means its good at this moment in time, whether you or a group etc. see that as a downfall in "the future of animation" is all up to personal opinion.

In agreement:
The whole "awesome-fad" reminds me of many fads, which you've mentioned that come and go. "Awesome" has just had much more response as to the others on the other sections of the website.
It also allows quick and successful animations, whether its a "short-cut" to making Top 100 flash is for people themselves to decide (after all theyre the ones who vote). Though i see what you mean by "if all people click on are breasts and video game icons, and you give them breasts and video game icons, you're not pushing the envelope."
When i first ever came to newgrounds it seemed quite the task to get something through the portal, especially with those annoying blam crews, yet now the stat-whores of newgrounds have filtered it, so basically anything can pass... and 13 year olds all seem to have ADHD now.
Though you said;
"It makes me wonder sometimes if pursuing anything but half-assed cartoons making mildly funny observations about video games laced with profanity is even worth it."
ofcoarse it is, when Xavier (marciano) released his animations they were shunned and voted on badly. Yet he continued to keep posting his flash works, then he posted 'Galapagos' then 'Hellboy' and he became a success (though short lived), the next he he released 'Across the Universe' i think this had a front page spot for nearly a week. He disappeared for 2 years after that. Rapaz was widely ignored and it seems Xavier has lost interest in animation or newgrounds, which is a shame. (thankfully Kol-Belov hasnt lost interest, yet his animations have changed a lot and seem to effect a wider audience (younger people ¬_¬))
My point being although a whole load of animators are ignored and never get their work seen. As you said; "this post is not about me", i agree its not, you seem to be able to grab peoples attention and your using it to show people theirs much more, (much better?), more artistic and beautiful aniamtions out their and that not everthing has to be video game parodies, pop-culture references and boobs. Anyways moving on...

Some crappy ranting: (i'd just skip it)
Yet, what i dont understand is you dont seem to like "tween-whores", yet when a FbF animation like "Awesome-whatever" comes out you use it as an example for a decline in animation. Just like Jerry Jackson flashes you need bad flashes to increase the animation quality of other submissions other wise if everyone was able to crap-out 30minute FbF "god-like" flashes no-one would care, they'd lose quality since it would become the norm.
The ego-whatever flash on the front page was a mystery to me, it was not exactly an animation since that requires movement, but more of a bunch of still images and voices.

Ending words:
Ever since the start of newgrounds people have said the exact same thing; that newgrounds is in decline, kids are taking over and "i cant get a girlfriend newgrounds help me" threads. Yet, every year the quality of animation slowly rises, the skills of the noobs of last year become much better and plenty of fads, and jokes circulate... and some refuse to die quietly.

Thank you RTIL for bringing up this information and allowing people to be informed about the goings on, maybe someone will, after reading this, decide to take a real look at whats on newgrounds rather than jump straight on the first "enter name" parody.

ps. you been here long enough to remember the "sprite fighting" fad? VGDC has inspired a lot of great flashes (even if sprite movies) since Mario get lucky (which was of poor quality).

pss. Whens Project Freetown part 2 coming out? Got a estimate date?

I agree that there are some people who have broken the ice and gotten their names out there with their own creations. They are far and few between though, and we all know it's so much easier for someone to whip out a sprite cartoon or anime knock-off and you'd get the show on the road much quicker.

i don't dislike tweens. i use them a bit myself. what i do think is that tweens are used inappropriately or excessively a lot. in the same way, a lot of people dive into fbf without understanding it at all. i'm not saying it's easy to pick up - it takes a lot of time and effort to begin to understand and apply the principles of animation. but lazy fbf is almost as bad as a poorly timed tween cartoon in my opinion.

as flash became a tool used in the professional industry, people started using it to its full potential. there is a lot of great content out there, and people like adam phillips are always challenging people to take it to the next level. but now we're at the point where every corner of flash has been discovered, and people have really maxed it out. i don't think you will see flash animation breaking any new boundaries any time in the near future, so long as the program stops changing (and it hasn't really changed for animators since 8).

that being said, competition is definitely more fierce, but i do think the majority of content here is lazily churned out for the sole purpose of exposure.

i do know of sprite 'fighters', and i think they should 'fight' it by actually producing original sprite works. i don't know why people think they can't draw their own sprites. it's very fun and they should give it a shot. i don't think i've ever seen a fully fleshed out original sprite cartoon.

and no estimate dates - otherwise i'll set myself up for a disappointment.

jesus that review is pretty dismal

i mean think about it, some guy hunching over his chair making some disgusting parody, for a good portion of his life even when it gets to a point where he doesn't want to.

it's almost like self prostitution.

So, it seems flash has become more of a popularity statues than a work of art, fun and creativeness? Hopefully not entirely, not yet anyways.
I'll still wait for and watch those few in many flashes that hold an artistic metaphor or creative idea who takes a chance to leave the watcher and/or understanding person(s) even the slightest bit happier, smarter, funnier and understanding then previous to watching, thats when i recognise a "good" flash.

I think that enough philosophical bull-shit from me, ive bored you enough.

i agrre with you rtil i know animation has gone down the drain and we need to dig it back up =/ i know yea i do like ego and will still watch his movies but im not gonna copy from him like so many other so called artists however if there was a flash animator i would look up to, i'd look up to you man. I mean your the most original artist ive ever seen, and you've have so many wonderful cartoons I wish I could animate like you, but that'll never happen. Listen rtil your one hell of an artist and you should never give up on animation we'll find a way to bring it back!

-risethemuffin

Ryan, I've watched you with interest for quite some time. I've also read a good number of your rants and mini-rants about cartoons in general and about Arin's cartoons, excuse me... Arin's scribbles for some time. You said calling them cartoons was a disgrace.
Whatever.

I've also read some form of the phrase, "you're not seeing the bigger picture, you've missed my point, that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about." Well quite frankly, what the hell are you talking about? I've read your bitch sessions over and over again trying to figure out what you're trying to say. It seems whenever someone else says they see what you're saying, you tell them they don't have a clue.

You don't like the world the way it is, so you rant. You pick a straw-man that exemplifies everything you find objectionable about the world (of Newgrounds) at the moment. So Egoraptor is this year's target. What happens when someone else comes along and is even more popular than Egoraptor? Then the new guy will receive your wrath. You'll always be down there on the bottom, looking up the skirt of whoever is at the top and you'll be complaining. There will always be an excuse as to why their stuff is crap and the quality artists aren't getting their due. Guess what! It's been that way since the dawn of time. It will be that way until the end of time. Yet, you make no suggestions on how to fix the things you see wrong. Ranting without suggesting improvements is whining... pure and simple. In fact, this rant is completely counter-productive as you're just fanning the flames and running his page views even higher.

Toyota will always outsell Ferrari. Honda will always outsell Mercedes. You're the Ferrari and you're pissed off because everyone else is driving Kias. You can rant from now until the end of time and you're not going to change that fact. But don't tell people there is something wrong with them because they don't buy a Mercedes.

Walk into a Wal-Mart and tell them there is something wrong because the classical music CDs are getting outsold 100 to 1 by the rap disks and the Country music is outselling them ny 1000 to 1. Tell them they need to feature the classical disks more prominently by the front door. They'll show you the front door really quickly. At least Newgrounds features your work and promotes it when it comes out. They even allow and even support your whining sessions in the name of "Everything by Everyone." But don't be surprised that this place isn't the way you want it. If it was, it couldn't survive, financially. Don't forget that behind the Flash Animations that is Newgrounds is a business. Whether Tom Fulp likes it or not, he has to get up every morning and make sure that the page views stay up, so the ads get sold, so the employees get paid.

If Egoraptor disappeared from Flash animation tomorrow, there would be someone else to take his place barely before anyone knew he was gone. Guess what... the same thing applies to you. At least with the millions of page views his animations (or whatever derogatory name you choose to call them), Tom can keep the lights on and just maybe one of those "masses of 13 year olds" you seem to loathe will actually click on Metropolis Circuit or Waterlollies or some other artistically beautiful piece of Flash art that grace these pages. Maybe they'll even like it! But if you cringe every time you look at someone's favorites list because Metal Gear Awesome and Metropolis Circuit are both on it, then you're thinking they're too stupid to really appreciate your work. If that's the case, what are you doing here at all?

So take your animations and accept your place in the classical section that not a lot of people frequent. At least you have the comfort in knowing that the people who come by to look at your stuff searched you out and truly wanted to see your stuff.

I will never 'take my place' and 'accept' your ridiculous idea of the status-quo. Your irrational comparisons of animation to things like car sales and music make absolutley no sense and have nothing to do with what I'm talking about.

What I'm talking about is the downfall of a very young industry that was mastered in the 50's and 60's, and nobody is taking heed of the advice of those people.

I know you'd like to think that you know me and who I am and what I think, but you are wrong. This is not a popularity contest, and this is not about me. It's not even about egoraptor - it's about animation.

I never called anyone stupid. I said people are fashioned to do certain things. Humans are creatures of habit, that is all.

If you think all I do is sit here and whine you are most certainly mistaken. I work tirelessly to teach people about animation and how to become better at it. I even run and maintain an animation encyclopedia on my site, which has more than 500 members and 150 articles. I wrote most of the material there, and I will continue to write it. I support my fellow animators whose work I enjoy, and I give them critique and advice when they ask for it.

So don't think I'm not doing anything about what I believe in. You are wrong, your presumptions about me are wrong, and what you have heard about me is wrong.

I know you would like to think otherwise but your argument holds no water. I act on my words.

Thank fuck someone written something worth reading on their news page. I know it blows big time that original content doesn't get watched because most people don't have the attention span to sit through it and sadly as Zekey said it's been going on for ever, like the legendary frog situation over again. The only thing about egoraptor is that thankfully the guy has a sense of humor. Personally I think the original stuff in his easter eggs like the improvised conversations are far funnier than the actual movies. Newgrounds will always have 13 year old kids who are amazed to see anything involving something they play or see in their everyday life, I mean I was the same, coming to newgrounds when I was like 12 to kill celebrities and watch *god forbid* Legendary Frog parodies and I loved them at the time, back then stuff like that was new. They'll grow up eventually and appreciate the better stuff. A gay thing about parodies though is it makes real flash animators uninspired, fuck I haven't made flash in ages, now I'm not using that as an excuse, but damn, flash I made in 2 days is in the top 100 viewed flashes and shit I spent a couple of years on is nowhere to be seen because it doesn't have pron in it. Fuck it man, I don't know what I'm talking about. Anyway you, don't make it seem that bad, not much of the top 50 are video game parodies and..wait, you've got 2 flashes in there...son of a bitch!!!

where have you been jenovi kenobi

rtil, your awesome on so many levels.
I love your animations etc etc.

But I also like Egoraptor.
Of course, his animation might not be the best there is.
He has a great understanding of fast paced humor... or something like that.
Its fun to watch.

I'll be honest with you... I only read like, the first column of your little news page.
And the picture at the end.

But still, I'd say he's a good animator.
Maby not on the "animation" part, and even I don't really agree on that, since his animation skills really improved.

Its just so much fun.

Yeah, it might be better when your and his skills are combined, because then you'd have humor AND amazingly great animation.
But you can't really blame people on there opinion.
Some people like different humor then you.

This of course, could be a completely strange and off-topic reply, since I never really read your part of the story. (sorry about that)

But keep up your great work, and I'm looking forward to more of your stuff.
Also, those replies you write on the replies your get, are awesome.

- Have fun at 4chan.

hehehe.

I think his animation in his latest was really good compared to the other movies.

I was stunned at how well the fbf was. That's the #1 reason I liked MGA2.

Also What pisses me off most is that Ashford Pride was being a Hypocrit.
His key points...

-Video Game parodies aren't funny
-Crappy half assed animation.

But... I mean, what about Ashford Pride!?

-Creates video game parodies.
-Uses Sprites, not even his own graphics.
-Uses other MP3 files, not his own creations.

I'm fine with someone hating on him who can actually make something better than egoraptor.

Also that Review is basically all of NG. Even if its not a VG Parody, they are all Retarded Youtubers. I lol'd.

AshfordPride knows that, but I'm pretty sure he's ashamed of his Pheonix Wrong days. otherwise i don't think he would have made that cartoon

If he really was upset about making all those movies, he would either delete them, or learn to draw. He can't draw for crap XD

Using google images..

Anyways..way to storm up a magnificient argument.

I think I have seen the least amount of incorrect spellings on any page of NG. I thank you for that :D

(More or less copypasta from a thread on RubberNinja's blog)
I can see where you're coming from with the VIDEOGAYMES=FIF!!!

I did a lot of the voices for the "Biosock" movie released not too long ago. It was a fun little thing, got to improv, first real gig away from my own stuff. It was coming along great from the thread.

Then I watched it. It's not a horrible movie, it just felt like pandering: there were internet memes abound, the animation and lipsync were minimal at best and the references were base enough so that even I (who doesn't own Bioshock or a 360) could get.

It got a 3.83 (it's 3.40 now), and Daily 3rd place.

I took a look at all of the reviews, and guess what I found: All the people who loved it (10/10s) were 18 or under. So, yeah the VG/internet meme bias is there.

The "How To Do Good On NG" guy was right. Just throw in some anime/hentai/LOLcats and you'll be #1 in no time!

Kidding aside, I think that -Move Your Feet- is one hell of a flash. If there was sort of TRL/Top Of The Pops Flash Edition, that would defintely make it.

Hey rtil,

Not everyone is here to make animations as their career choice!
A lot of people just want to make some animations to make people laugh, to entertain them. Maybe they want to have some people tell them they rule.
I personally have way too much other shit on my plate to put the time and effort you put into your cartoons (I know this isn't about you).

Calling tomorrow's nobodies the "tweenfest team" is obnoxious. They just want to entertain people and get feedback (and get some money out of it, but hey, who can blame them).

I'm not saying I don't get slightly irritated when a cartoon of mine gets less views than a horribly animated video game parody (not MGA, his animation is fine, and I would hardly call it scribbles). I'm saying that this isn't a site for the journey of animation. This is a site (I know everyone has said it) "Everything by Everyone".

Hopefully the little 12 year olds will grow up to have a more mature taste.
There are still people who orgie over your flashes, they're just outnumbered by the throng of young'ns.

I hope I haven't misunderstood you lol...

well to me animation isn't some sort of sideshow. i know that there are people here who don't want to do it as a career, but that begs the question - why are they animating. it obviously takes a lot of work to get flash, learn how to use it and make it web-ready. if their motives are wrong they're probably wasting their time.

i don't think everyone should be overly passionate and some kind of animation guru, but if you're purposely making something look bad because you want to save time or it's not worth your time, then get a webcam and do it on youtube for gods' sake.

i'm not interested in how many people 'orgie' over my flashes. what i am interested in is more real animators pursuing what animation once was.

i hate video game parodies and never seen MGA 1 .. i did see this second one and I enjoyed it.. i felt the crudeness of the artwork and presentation compliments the fact that its just some time-waster, fan-based animation... its not going out to win an oscar or whatever... its not out to change the train of thought of the animation scene.
Not everyone is out to change the paradigm of animation with everything they do... alot of the content that exists on newgrounds doesnt come from an animation studio or is some calculated gamble.. most of the time its a guy in his basement chipping away at the 23023 frames ahead of him because he has nothing to do after work or whatever... In the end, flash animation is about having fun... it has to be... lets be honest, animation is fucking masochistic...
I think I'd become unhappy about the medium if I knew that every animation I make, I have to carry the fate of the dying 2d animation artform on my back.

I admire the fact that youre very passionate about keeping the artform alive and well. Thats commendible and i fully endorse that, i just dont think its productive to be necessarily that pessimistic about it when you see someone enjoying the medium but not necessarily taking the scene as a whole into account.

We're all peers in the industry.. its not a dog eat dog world for everyone out there... it should be about tolerance not shunning. I think its refreshing when you do your movies where you dont take yourself seriously and youre just messing around ie that pixel retro movie... when youre not making the next project freetown.. or waterlollies or whatever... i appreciate the giant movies as much as i appreciate the bullshit ones.. i dont think the bullshit ones degrade anything.. its just a different flavor in the animation universe. I think you just need to stop looking at the hairline cracks and just admire the sculpture as a whole even with cracks included.

yeah i think you're taking what i said and blowing it way out of proportion. i never said one person or one cartoon was going to change the face of animation. i said it can start with one cartoon, or in this case a series, and branch off into other things.

and i would know firsthand that not everything on newgrounds comes out of a studio? i work alone and i always have.

i don't know where people are getting this idea that i'm some stern super serious person who never has any fun or whatever. i love animating, and i do every cartoon for fun. i also try to make them the best i can. that pixel cartoon was a comedy cartoon (like uh, 90% of all my other cartoons), and i worked on it very very hard.

taking it seriously is fun for me. having fun doesn't mean you have to make a piece of garbage and laugh about it.

but i sincerely cannot appreciate glorified 'bullshit' cartoons, as you called them. if you admire the fact that i am passionate about keeping the artform alive, then you can't expect me to do that either. part of my life is teaching and bettering animation. it is very troubling to see where animation is headed and i will do everything i can to stop that from happening.

in the same way i respect the fact that you don't care, respect the fact that i do.

It's really good to see you are concerned about the future of animation. Yes, kids seem to be getting less sharp as time goes on, but since this can't be forcibly changed, all animators that remember what real animation is about will just have to keep creating in hopes of inspiring. I don't think good animators will cease to exist, inspiration is always passed on. I think of it as fate - advancements in technology are causing many problems today with the environment, but you wouldn't exactly want to go back to the stone age, so we all just have to deal with it. Some people serve to show others how not to act. Even though you would not wish this kind of life on them, they can't be changed be anyone but themselves, so we have to live with it.

As long as there are people like us who think, there will always be those little gems that show up on Newgrounds every once in a while.
