tl;dr

dear god I think I've never seen so many comments in a news post where I'd say tl;dr to 90% of them...

Ah, and about Tomorrow's Nobodies: Chase does all of the art, and about 90% of the animation. He does most of the animation frame by frame, and the only tweening he does is certain head movements. Just because each frame doesn't have a separately drawn piece of art doesn't mean it isn't animated frame by frame.

rotating symbols is not traditional animation.

No, I won't pretend that I know you. Further, I don't think I'd like to know someone who is as bitter as your rants would lead one to believe. You write and write and you are still so ambiguous as to be a complete blur. I've read your assumptions of others, but when someone makes an assumption of you, you're quick to point out that they're wrong. Quite frankly, whether you see it or not, the cars metaphor isn't that far off the mark. Dismiss it if you wish. I must have missed your point.

The young industry you refer to is alive, even if you think it's in downfall. The fact that no one is taking heed of the advice of the masters is no different than those who said sound would ruin movies and color would ruin movies and then television would ruin movies. It's an industry that is constantly going through a metamorphosis, due more to advancing technology than anything else. I might level the charge that when animation left the realm of ink, paper and cels that it died. Your argument is specious. Yeah, I know... I missed your point. Seems pretty much everyone does that.

You take a few liberties with my previous post, too. Do you cringe when you see your video on a favorites list with Metal Gear Awesome? Why? And you're right. You didn't call anyone stupid, but you do a great job of painting that picture and not giving it a name.

See... you missed my point. I didn't say "all you do is sit here and whine." But come to think of it, that's the only thing that seems to gain you any notoriety around here. I've been to your site and seen a lot of what you've done. It's admirable. I know... it's not about the admiration. You eschew that sort of thing. You're a really talented artist, too. But you don't think so. You should be proud of what it is you've done, but I remember reading something about being proud of your work is the day you stop growing as an animator. Sorry if I didn't get the wording exactly right. It's not about the popularity, but you're railing against how something can be so unjustly popular. It's not even about Egoraptor, yet I've seen you personally attack him verbally and mock him.

So in a nutshell it sounds like you are telling me , everything one would digest from seeing your work, reading your blogs, visiting your site is wrong. I'm assuming nothing further about you. You sir are a fraud.

I honestly believe that if animation transitioned completely from 2d to 3d it would eventually die or go back to its roots. The principles of animation are all based upon what was learned when computers weren't even around, and it was hugely successful. When people transition from that to software, they often ignore these things. While they're still applicable in 3d, the reason companies like Pixar are so successful is because all their animators come from a 2d background. I've even met some of them and this is what they've told me themselves, so I'm not making it up out of thin air.

But enough about that. I'm actually a very nice person, you know. Yet you choose to observe me from the shadows and make cowardly observations about my character, then put them on display as if you've proved i'm some sort of hackjob. Well let's get down to brass tacks then. I gained a lot of 'noteriety' around here way before these god forsaken news posts became a feature. And if you're so upset about me being outspoken right here - you're not helping.

You keep making this about some kind of rivalry between me and egoraptor, when quite frankly i do not care about egoraptor. if i was trying to rival him, i'd be making video game parodies. I used him as an example because he's a good example to prove my point. People feed off what is influential around here. And if they're given the idea that they don't have to create new things to have a slice of the pie, they're not going to. And it piles on.

I could go on, but it seems to me you're simply upset because your top 4 favorites are examples of exactly what I'm talking about. I don't care that my cartoon is in the same favorites list. Why would I.

You're just hearing what you want to hear. I am not a fraud - you simply wish I was. I've done all I have been able to for the animation community and I will continue to do so. Try and tell that I'm a fraud to the people I have helped and you will get a mouthful. Truly your observations of me are worthless if all you have gathered is that i am a 'fraud'. You say you don't claim to know me, then you judge me. That is pathetic.

But on the bright side, Toof is coming back to Newgrounds.

Can't wait!

Luis said it best with his last comment.

if you're so interested in keeping animation as a sacred art, stop using flash and pick up a pencil and some cels, you silly goose, you.

and of course, i'm being dead serious here.

i do traditional cel animation (see my 'traditional animation' in my cartoon list), and i also scan original frames and work them over in flash.

professionals in the industry also use flash as well. foster's, chowder and many other cartoons are done in flash.

Oh god damnit not toof.

toof? i think i just threw up a little...and then i swallowed it. :(

you have some really good points but there are some things that an artist does just for the enjoyment of doing it and if they want to shre it with other people thats fine. Most of the videos people just enjoy doing and that will never stop. Ya there are some videos that people should just keeps to themselves or the just make them so that they can claim they have a movie on newgrounds YAY for them (sarcasm). YA i might not have anything submitted yet but thats because im working my ass off to make a really decent flash that coud just get beat out by someone who just ahs a bouncing ball because it ammuses the little kids with no brains (no offense to those). So newgrounds shouldnt allow someone to put a spam video on just for the recognition while those that work their asses of arent allowed to recieve.

THE REAL ENEMY IS PIXAR AND THE 3D INDUSTRY not a bunch of scribble 2d animations that make cracks on metal gear.

i'm sure you're being sarcastic but aside from pixar a lot of the 3d industry is really dangerous to the future of animation.

Luis knows his stuff.

You are one cynical fuck.

thanks for the info

hey rtil, I was not surprised in the least to see this post today. You really do seem to know you're facts about the matter and can see how passionate and seriously you take this. However I see thatu said the animation was bad. I would love for you to go into detail on that. Fuck yes there are better animations out there, but he shower basic anatomy knowledge - which is more than lots can say. It was done very sloppy but I would not have called it bad - nor great though. I release this is not about mga2 though. But you seek to always prejudge cartoons and decide you hate them, blockead, family guy, etc. Yes they are not the best cartoons but I would never consider them bad. I agree with your opinion though, but i do think you should open your eyes a liytle wider to the newer anmtions. Yes some of the old ones were better, but I just think you see to much negative in certain cartoons - which is why I would like you to go into detail why you thought mga2 was bad. I didn't love it but he showed some knowledge of fbf, anatomy, and timing which i think areimportant.

sry bout the spelling I am on my touch and it changes words and shit so fill it in with what makes sense plz

We should all stop watching Pixar's movies and become 2d animators who makes solely serious original animation and not some video games parody! Yippee!

On a serious note Rtil, after reading through the replies you wrote I think you overreacted abit. If people make original works that are that damn good they'll get recognized, even if it's not some random video game parody or something. And I don't think Egoraptor's awesome movie is trash. The fact that I do agree with you about the animation industry doesn't mean that I agree with you going around bashing people who makes animation for fun. If you do truly think that animation should be reserved to only people who want to seriously pursuit it then fine, just stick with that idea and continue animation if it makes you happy.

i don't think that. i think people should not mimick someone to leech off their popularity, who leeched off a video game. that's what most people do today. and i know most of them do it because they think they have to.

The madness of Newgrounds and the Internet.

For my life, I don't think I could ever write that much (like in the comments) over something like this.

i'm used to it

If you want less, then make less of this stuff

The thing is, i think your neglecting the rest of the flash. Yes, they are some awesome flashes on the top 50, but what about the other 47 or 48. Personally, i like the awesome series. I think the voices are sometimes the best. In the MGA 2, my favorite part was where the thing said he like castlevania, and the character got really confused. That isn't potty humor, fart jokes, or boobes. The way i think you see it, its like a cold and it will spread. Its just another branch of the great world of animation.

i dunno, i could write a hefty bit about most of the things in the top 100, or the top 50 for that matter.

I believe it's good for you to bring this up so, if nothing else, it makes the average person you're talking about think twice before they cut a corner and try to have some integrity in their work. But that's a pretty high-hope to have from a blog post. There are some specifics on philosophy I might argue with you, but it's just because my take on things is from a different background.

I do think you should be more forthcoming with what action you'd like to see happen though. It's quite easy to criticize (as you can see from many of the responses to your post even).

From reading through everything you've written, it looks like you think Tom should not so heavily promote some of these things you consider sub-par. I may be wrong, but is your real desire for Tom to use the power of NG to promote what falls into your philosophy of "worthy animation" and leave the rest out, or are you trying to sway the community itself? If it is a criticism of how NG is run, I would ask "have you emailed Tom about it?" What are you doing (besides this news post) to specifically improve the situation you're highlighting? Are you fencing from the back row, or are you willing to wade into the politics to make change?

My biggest question though is, what would you have ME do to make "animation" better as a whole?

The reason why i didn't mention someone like tom is because i didn't want to point fingers at one person for EVERYTHING, that isn't fair. tom knows what i think about this anyway. what am i doing? i'm trying to teach and spread 2d animation, the history of animation and what was good about the golden age of animation through my animation encyclopedia, anipedia. it's on my website at http://anipedia.thebackalleys.com . it has over 500 members and 150 articles, and i wrote a good chunk of the material myself. i also try my best to give advice and critique to those who are interested in animation.

a lot of people give up on animation because they have nowhere to turn to or lean on. i hope that someday anipedia can be a resource animators can use to learn how to take the raw ideas in their head and make them come to life, instead of mimicking what an internet community deems 'popular'.

what would i have you do? i don't know, because i haven't seen any of your work. but what my ideas about what makes a cartoon good are not someone else's. i really don't have a problem with parody, except when that's all people lean on or milk it because they know they can.

Don't worry... be happy... every little thing... is gonna be alright.
